God's Glory Reflected (Ex. 34:29-35)

My Worship Time           Focus:  God’s glory reflected

Bible Reading & Meditation               Reference:  Exodus 34:29-35

Message of the verses:  “29  It came about when Moses was coming down from Mount Sinai (and the two tablets of the testimony were in Moses’ hand as he was coming down from the mountain), that Moses did not know that the skin of his face shone because of his speaking with Him.  30  So when Aaron and all the sons of Israel saw Moses, behold, the skin of his face shone, and they were afraid to come near him.  31  Then Moses called to them, and Aaron and all the rulers in the congregation returned to him; and Moses spoke to them.  32  Afterward all the sons of Israel came near, and he commanded them to do everything that the LORD had spoken to him on Mount Sinai.  33  When Moses had finished speaking with them, he put a veil over his face.  34  But whenever Moses went in before the LORD to speak with Him, he would take off the veil until he came out; and whenever he came out and spoke to the sons of Israel what he had been commanded, 35  the sons of Israel would see the face of Moses, that the skin of Moses’ face shone. So Moses would replace the veil over his face until he went in to speak with Him.”

I have also read 2 Corinthians chapter 3 to go along with this section as Paul mentions this event while writing to the Corinthian believers.

Why did Moses put on the veil when speaking to the children of Israel?  Dr. Wiersbe points out that it was not because the children of Israel were afraid of seeing Moses with his face shining, but it was because Moses did not want the children of Israel to see his face loosing the reflected glory of God.  Moses would go into the tabernacle and be with the Lord so that His glory would again be with Moses, but this reflected glory would always fade away.

Paul writes that the glory of the old Covenant had was fading away and there was a glory in the New Covenant of Jesus Christ that would never fade away and that the unbelieving Jews had a veil over their hearts so that they could not see that the Lord Jesus Christ was the only way to have their sins forgiven and assure a place for them in heaven.

How do I as believer in Jesus Christ receive the glory of God in my life?  Dr. Wiersbe points out how this is done.  “Finally he (Paul) applied Moses’ experience to Christians who by faith see the glory of Jesus Christ in the Word and experience a spiritual transformation (vv. 17-18 of 2 Cor. 3).  This is why Christians read the Bible and meditate on it, because when the child of God looks into the Word of God and sees the Son of God, he or she is transformed by the Spirit of God into the image of God for the glory of God.”  The word transformed is the Greek word where in the English we get metamorphous, changing from the inside out.  The word is also used in Romans 12:2:  “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.”

Spiritual meaning for my life:  What Paul writes in 2 Cor. 3 gives the spiritual meaning for me as a NT believer in Jesus Christ.  Paul writes that as a believer I am to be changed from the inside out by reading and studying the Bible and allowing the Holy Spirit of God to work out this process as I read and study God’s Word each day of my life.  Paul says that a NT believer should be changed from one glory to another glory and this can only be done through this process of reading and studying God’s Word.

My Steps of Faith for Today:

  1. Continue to read and study God’s Word each day of my life.
  2. Put on the spiritual armor of God.
  3. Trust the Lord to guide my path.
  4. Trust the Lord to take care of our financial problems.

Memory verses for the week:                      Exodus 20:1-6

  1. Then God spoke all these words, saying,
  2. I am the Lord your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
  3. You shall have no other gods before me.
  4. You shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on earth beneath or in the water under the earth.
  5. You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children on the third and forth generations of those who hate me,
  6. but showing loving kindness to thousands, to those who love me and keep my commandments.
