God's Glory Revealed (Ex:33:18-33)

This is one of the most important portions of all the OT.  I have another blog post on this section entitled "John Calvin's note on Exodus 33:19b."

My Worship Time           Focus:  God’s glory revealed

Bible Reading & Meditation               Reference:  Exodus 33:18-23

Message of the verses:  “18  Then Moses said, "I pray You, show me Your glory!"  19  And He said, "I Myself will make all My goodness pass before you, and will proclaim the name of the LORD before you; and I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show compassion on whom I will show compassion."  20  But He said, "You cannot see My face, for no man can see Me and live!"  21  Then the LORD said, "Behold, there is a place by Me, and you shall stand there on the rock; 22  and it will come about, while My glory is passing by, that I will put you in the cleft of the rock and cover you with My hand until I have passed by.  23  "Then I will take My hand away and you shall see My back, but My face shall not be seen.’”

The first thing that I want to say here is that the verse note from the Online Bible from John Calvin’s notes helped me to understand a portion of this section that I did not understand before.  I also can say that on days like this it is when I truly miss my dear friend and Pastor, Dr. Jack Jacobs, for I could have gone to him and had a wonderful discussion about this passage to the glory of God.

Dr. Wiersbe points out that when a servant of God, and he is speaking of a Pastor or leader in the Church has a difficult time with his flock that he needs a fresh look at the glory of God and this is exactly what Moses asked for at this time.

The question that I had was why did God say to Moses what He said to him in verse nineteen, “I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show compassion on whom I will show compassion?”  John Calvin’s commentary showed me the answer to that question when he connected the sin of the people that is the making of the golden calf, therefore breaking the first commandment that God gave them, he connected this statement with that act.  These were God’s chosen people and God has chosen to have mercy on them, and this does not that He looks away from their sin for God did judge the wicked ones here, but God answers to know one and therefore He can have mercy on who he wants to have mercy.

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  I desire greatly to have a new view of the glory of God because of all the trials and tests and at times sinful habits that are happening in my life today.  This is what I desire and what I pray that God will show, not only me but also my wife, as we go through this together.

My Steps of Faith for Today:

  1. To have the desire to have God reveal to me His glory.
  2. Put on my spiritual armor.
  3.  Trust the Lord to guide my path.
  4. Learn contentment through the trials I am going through.

Memory verses for the week:                      Exodus 20:1-6

  1. Then God spoke all these words, saying,
  2. I am the Lord your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, our of the house of slavery.
  3. You shall have no other gods before Me.
  4. You shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth.
  5. You shall not worship or serve them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and forth generation of them that hate me,
  6. but showing lovingkindness to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.
