The Priests Were Anointed (Ex. 29:7, 21, Lev. 8:10-12, 30)

My Worship Time           Focus:  The priests were anointed

Bible Reading & Meditation     Reference:  Exodus 29:7, 21; Lev. 8:10-12,30

            Message of the verses:  “7  "Then you shall take the anointing oil and pour it on his head and anoint him.

            “21  "Then you shall take some of the blood that is on the altar and some of the anointing oil, and sprinkle it on Aaron and on his garments and on his sons and on his sons’ garments with him; so he and his garments shall be consecrated, as well as his sons and his sons’ garments with him.

            “10  Moses then took the anointing oil and anointed the tabernacle and all that was in it, and consecrated them.  11  He sprinkled some of it on the altar seven times and anointed the altar and all its utensils, and the basin and its stand, to consecrate them.  12  Then he poured some of the anointing oil on Aaron’s head and anointed him, to consecrate him.

            “30  So Moses took some of the anointing oil and some of the blood which was on the altar and sprinkled it on Aaron, on his garments, on his sons, and on the garments of his sons with him; and he consecrated Aaron, his garments, and his sons, and the garments of his sons with him.”

            The anointing of the priests and the things that were in the tabernacle was done with the oil which was described in Exodus 30:22-33.  The priests and the kings were anointed in the OT and this was a symbol that God had granted them the Holy Spirit for power and service.  “1 ¶  The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, Because the LORD has anointed me To bring good news to the afflicted; He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to captives And freedom to prisoners;

2  To proclaim the favorable year of the LORD And the day of vengeance of our God; To comfort all who mourn, 3  To grant those who mourn in Zion, Giving them a garland instead of ashes, The oil of gladness instead of mourning, The mantle of praise instead of a spirit of fainting. So they will be called oaks of righteousness, The planting of the LORD, that He may be glorified.”  This is from Isaiah 61:1-3 and is quoted by Jesus Christ in Luke 4:17-19 and this speaks of the anointing of Jesus Christ to do the work that God had called Him to do.

            New Testament believes have been anointed with the Holy Spirit and this can be seen in John’s writings in 1 John 2:20, and 27.  It can also be seen in Paul’s writings in 2Cor. 1:21-22.  Warren Wiersbe points out that “John’s emphasis is on the teaching ministry of the Spirit in guiding the believer into the truth of the Word of God.  Paul’s emphasis is on encouragement and stability:  we have been anointed and sealed by the Spirit, and the Spirit is the ‘down payment’ of future glory.”

            Spiritual meaning for my life today:  Warren Wiersbe went on saying, “If God has anointed us, sealed us, and given us a foretaste of heaven, then why should we despair or feel that He will ever desert us?”  I think that due to the circumstances that Sandy and I are going through at this time that these words should be an encouragement to her and to me.

My Steps of Faith for Today:

  1. Begin the day by putting on my spiritual armor.
  2. Trust the Lord to guide my steps today.
  3. Believe that God will give me the grace to get me through the trials and tests of today.

Memory verses for the week:                      Exodus 20:1-4

  1. Then God spoke all these words, saying,
  2. I am the Lord your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
  3. You shall have no other gods before Me.
  4. You shall not make for yourselves an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth.
