The Various Sacrifices Offered (Lev. 8:14-29)

My Worship Time           Focus:  The various sacrifices offered

Bible Reading & Meditation               Reference:  Leviticus 8:14-29

Message of the verses:  “14 ¶  Then he brought the bull of the sin offering, and Aaron and his sons laid their hands on the head of the bull of the sin offering.  15  Next Moses slaughtered it and took the blood and with his finger put some of it around on the horns of the altar, and purified the altar. Then he poured out the rest of the blood at the base of the altar and consecrated it, to make atonement for it.  16  He also took all the fat that was on the entrails and the lobe of the liver, and the two kidneys and their fat; and Moses offered it up in smoke on the altar.  17  But the bull and its hide and its flesh and its refuse he burned in the fire outside the camp, just as the LORD had commanded Moses.  18  Then he presented the ram of the burnt offering, and Aaron and his sons laid their hands on the head of the ram.  19  Moses slaughtered it and sprinkled the blood around on the altar.  20  When he had cut the ram into its pieces, Moses offered up the head and the pieces and the suet in smoke.

21  After he had washed the entrails and the legs with water, Moses offered up the whole ram in smoke on the altar. It was a burnt offering for a soothing aroma; it was an offering by fire to the LORD, just as the LORD had commanded Moses.  22  Then he presented the second ram, the ram of ordination, and Aaron and his sons laid their hands on the head of the ram.  23  Moses slaughtered it and took some of its blood and put it on the lobe of Aaron’s right ear, and on the thumb of his right hand and on the big toe of his right foot.  24  He also had Aaron’s sons come near; and Moses put some of the blood on the lobe of their right ear, and on the thumb of their right hand and on the big toe of their right foot. Moses then sprinkled the rest of the blood around on the altar.  25  He took the fat, and the fat tail, and all the fat that was on the entrails, and the lobe of the liver and the two kidneys and their fat and the right thigh.  26  From the basket of unleavened bread that was before the LORD, he took one unleavened cake and one cake of bread mixed with oil and one wafer, and placed them on the portions of fat and on the right thigh.  27  He then put all these on the hands of Aaron and on the hands of his sons and presented them as a wave offering before the LORD.  28  Then Moses took them from their hands and offered them up in smoke on the altar with the burnt offering. They were an ordination offering for a soothing aroma; it was an offering by fire to the LORD.  29  Moses also took the breast and presented it for a wave offering before the LORD; it was Moses’ portion of the ram of ordination, just as the LORD had commanded Moses.”

After the sacrifices were killed part of the blood was poured out near the altar at it’s base and then part was burned on the altar, which sanctified the altar, and some of the blood was put on the right big toe, the right thumb, and also on the right ear lobe.  Aaron and his sons were set apart to hear God’s voice, do God’s work, and walk in God’s ways.

There was a bull offered in order to cleanse Aaron and his sons which was a burnt offering which symbolized their total dedication to the Lord.  The ram was for the ordination offering which symbolized their communion with one another and with the Lord.  The word for ordination means to “fill up” and part of this offering was waved before the Lord and this was for Aaron and his sons to fill up on for they were to eat this offering.

Jesus Christ is the believer’s high priest and He did not need any sacrifices made on His behalf because He is the perfect Son of God who as John the Baptist says, “take away the sins of the world.”

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  This was quite a process, a holy process that I, as a believer in Jesus Christ alone for my salvation, do not have to had done for me because Jesus Christ, the sinless, perfect, Son of God did it all for me in order to give me salvation through His blood He shed on the cross.

My Steps of Faith for Today:

  1. Be thankful for the salvation provided for me through Jesus Christ.
  2. Put on my spiritual armor.
  3. Trust the Lord to guide my paths.
  4. Give myself to the Lord for service and worship.

Memory verses for the week:                      Exodus 20:4-7

  1. You shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth.
  2. You shall not worship or serve them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children of the third and forth generations of those who hate me,
  3. but showing lovingkindness to thousands, to those who love me and keep my commandments.
  4. You shall not take the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not leave him unpunished who takes His name in vain.
