Begining to Study the Book of Leviticus

My Worship Time           Focus:  Purpose of the book of Leviticus

Bible Reading & Meditation               Reference:  No reference for today

Message of the verse:  I want to say something about the task that is before me, and that is studying the book of Leviticus.  This will probably be the most difficult book that I have ever tried to study since I have been doing these spiritual diaries.  I know that Leviticus is the first book that Jewish parents teach to their children and therefore that makes if very important for me to study it.

The theme of the book is the Holiness of God and that is a very wonderful thing to study.  God is perfectly holy and He wants His children to be holy.  Eight times in the Bible the Lord says, “Be holy, for I am holy.”  I believe that seven of these are found in the OT and Peter then writes it in his letter also.

There is a lot of clean and unclean things found in the book of Leviticus and the clean represent the holy things and the unclean represent the unholy things and of course God wants holiness to be developed in His children.

According to Dr. Wiersbe this book was written in the first month of the second year after the children of Israel were brought out of the land of Egypt by the Lord.

There are seven divisions or sub-themes found in the book of Leviticus all having to do with holiness. A holy God; A holy priesthood; A holy people; A holy land; and A holy Savior.

In Dr. Wiersbe book he uses a similar outline system that he used in part of his book on Exodus by going to different themes and not using a verse by verse study from the first chapter to the end of the book.  I believe that this system will help me to understand the different themes or sub-themes in this book and therefore understand it better.

In conclusion to this first SD on Leviticus I would like to say that I want to learn to live in a more holy manner before my Lord as a result of studying this book.
